Mad Men stars emulate curvy sex appeal, 60s style

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

The Emmy Award and Golden Globe-winning  TV show Mad Men is all the rage right now — and not just because it’s an amazing show that’s set in 1960s New York complete with amazing vintage-y clothes, but because it features beautiful, curvy actresses like January Jones and Christina Hendricks. Bravo!

I just finished reading an article on MSNBC.com about how the show’s creator encourages his leading ladies not to go to the gym because he wants them to be curvy. January Jones even mentions that she wishes more women would realize that men like curves. Amen to that, sister! I believe that whole-heartedly!

To celebrate that wonderful message and the fantastic AMC show, I’ve compiled a few different ModCloth dresses that accentuate those curves you should show off in true 1960s style!

The Blushing Ambition Dress is a cute halter dress with a full skirt and matching belt. The sweetheart neckline makes it feminine and flirty. This is a more relaxed, nautical-inspired style for lazy Sundays, whether you’re out running errands or having a picnic in the park.

A shorter, sexier option is the Sweetest Thing Dress, which is a girly pink with a lace overlay and ¾-length sleeves. The scoop neckline balances out the shorter hemline, keeping it on-point. It reminds me of the red dress Christina Hendricks is wearing in the photo accompanying the article I mentioned above.

The A.M. Pep Up Dress is great for playing “powerful working woman” in a Mad Men’s world. The pleated and draped detailing on the front is to-die-for, and the high neckline keeps it appropriate for work. Pair it with some classic pumps, and you’re set to look great while climbing the corporate ladder.

Lastly, the There’s Something About Dress in Navy has a nice tailored neckline and a sexy open back — it immediately made me think of fancy dinner parties and Manhattans. (What ever happened to Cocktail Hour, and how do we bring it back?!)

If this Mad Men-inspired style doesn’t make you beam with pride for having luscious curves (and/or want to throw a Mad Men-themed cocktail party), then perhaps browsing the show’s website and having a Mad Men Marathon will help!

Casual, yet chic vintage-inspired dresses by ModCloth

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

I am constantly in search of the perfect “everyday” dress—something not too dressy and not too casual, but a dress I can pair knee-high boots with and wear to work just as easily as slip on a pair of flats and run errands without looking like I tried to look good for the grocery store (I’m always awkwardly running into people I knew back in high school—ugh).

I found the Channel Flannel Dress at ModCloth, and though I’m not a huge fan of plaid, I love the neckline and the three-quarter length sleeves. The model photo of the dress shows it paired with thigh high socks, which I like, but I would opt for cream colored leggings for extra warmth because of the high hemline. I would wear it to work because we’re casual here at Style on a Whim, but leave it till the weekend if you’re a corporate girl.

For a flirty-casual look, try ModCloth’s Belay On Dress. The fluttery sleeves and sheer fabric soften it, while the waist tie cinches you enough to show off a little shape. It’s feminine, but you can pair it with a slouchy sweater and coordinating thick knit tights to make it more casual. This one can definitely go to the office with a black sweater, some dark tights and sensible but stylish low-heeled boots. Sport it with just a big floppy straw hat and sandals in the summer.

I love ModCloth’s Bienvenido a Miami painterly dolman-style dress, with its pastel colors. It truly reminds me of tropical beaches—and who doesn’t love tropical beaches?! In cold weather, I would wear knee high socks and an oversized sweater under a cinch-waisted peacoat. In warm weather, I’d run errands in this and a pair of my cheapy flip flops!
