Tips for Guy Gifting the (Slightly) Less Fashionable Man

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

Let’s face it, ladies—the men in our lives are tough to buy for. They think we’re picky, but one shopping trip out with them and you hear things like:

“This shirt is too short on me.”

“I don’t like stripes this thin.”

“These jeans are too stiff.”

“The fabric just doesn’t feel right.”

“The color is too bright.”

(And they think we’re bad!)

Or perhaps it’s the total opposite—he’ll pick up anything and buy it without even trying it on, so he ends up with a closet full of oversized shirts and pants that are too short. Ick. He either cares too much or not nearly enough.

Luckily, women are usually much more fashion forward than our male counterparts, and the holidays are a great opportunity for us to gently guide our men toward well-cut dress shirts and far away from a wardrobe full of black t-shirts. Yay for fashionable gift giving!

Be sure to take note of your guy’s “style” and don’t stray too far from what he likes. If he’s a fan of graffic t-shirts but only seems to wear navy blue and black, get him a maroon or royal blue shirt instead. If he only wears solid colored dress shirts, try finding one in your favorite color (to see on him) with thin pinstripes. If he has a pair of torn-to-shreds jeans that he wears regardless of the location or occasion (think a nice dinner out or meeting your parents), try finding a pair with strategic, small worn patches.

It’s not about changing who he is—some guys just get a little lost because they don’t pay attention to fashion like we do. Plus there’s always the fear of looking too metro!

Here are a few affordable options for gift giving to your guy:

This premium pinstriped shirt from American Eagle Outfitters is perfect for bringing your guy to a family function. He can pair it with nice jeans and a black undershirt for a pulled-together, no-fuss look. (Web photo)

I like a man in a nice watch—not a $3,000 watch, just a nice one. This Twist Black Dial Fossil watch is nothing fancy, but it looks good for everyday wear. It shows he pays attention and is probably always on time. Now, if he glances at his watch more than you on a date, then he’s in big trouble! (Web photo)

Cologne is always a great gift because it gives you a chance to pick a scent that drives you wild, giving him an excellent reason to wear it! I like pretty much any cologne from Armani—they’re all very sophisticated scents without being Old Spice-ish. (Web photo)

The cold weather is perfect for snuggling up to him, so get your man something that gives you an excuse to do just that. This long-sleeved crew neck from Express keeps him warm and toasty, so he can make you warm and toasty, too!

If you’re going to ask your man to dress up for a special occasion, be sure to find an accessory for him that’ll make dressing up more bearable for him. Let him wear a big belt buckle or get him a tie—like this skull print one from Express—that lets his style show a little.

Just remember—no one likes drastic change. Guys are nervous that their guy friends will poke fun at their “new look”, so keep the changes on the small side and always tell him how handsome he looks—this should go without saying because, after all, you love when he comments on how good you look!

Merry Guy Gifting!!
